मार्च के प्रारंभ में दिल्ली के निजामुद्दीन मरकज मस्जिद में होने वाला तबलीगी जमात नामक मजहबी जनसमूह कोरोनवायरस के एक तिव्र-प्रसारक घटना के रूप में सामने आया, जिसके बाद 900 से अधिक[१] मामलों की पुष्टी हुई तथा देश भर में इस घटना से जुड़े कम से कम 10 लोगों की मौत हो गई।[२] 9,000 से अधिक मजहबी-प्रचारकों ने जनसमूह में भाग लिया, जिनमें से अधिकांश भारत के विभिन्न राज्यों से थे,[३][४] तथा 40 अन्य देशों से 960 लोग उपस्थित थे।[५] 4 अप्रैल तक, 17 राज्यों में 1,023 मामले तबलीगी जमात महामारी विस्फिट-केन्द्र (हॉटस्पॉट) से जुड़े हैं, जो भारत में पुष्टि किए गए सभी मामलों के 30% का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं।[६] तबलीगी जमात के सदस्यों और देश भर में उनके संपर्कों सहित कुल 22,000 लोगों को क्वारंटाइन (संगरोध) में रखा गया है।[७]
13 मार्च को दिल्ली सरकार द्वारा सार्वजनिक समारोहों पर प्रतिबंध लगाने के बावजूद इस जनसभा को आयोजित करने के लिए तबलीगी जमात को मुस्लिम समुदाय द्वारा व्यापक आलोचना का सामना करना पड़ा।[८]
